When working from life, everyday objects are some of the best to paint: readily available and beautiful in their simplicity. The very nature of these kinds of pictures encourages the viewer to pause for a moment to contemplate the extraordinary nature of ordinary objects rendered in paint, hence the genre "still life".
Sophie began painting still life during her apprenticeship with James Gillick in 2012, himself a prolific still life painter. During this apprenticeship Sophie also learnt to craft bespoke panels using the traditional techniques of the Dutch Masters. The below works are all painted from life on these hand crafted panels, which adds quality and longevity to a well received series of contemporary traditionalist works.
