How to Commission an Original Painting or Drawing

Commissioning a painting or drawing from me is simpler than you might think, but it's an area that many people are uncertain about, so I've broken it down into the steps below to help you understand the process. When you're ready, you can get in touch for your free quote by emailing sophiehallartist@gmail.com, or complete the commission enquiry form here.

Step 1: Decide what artwork you want

You don't need to be sure of all the details at this stage, but it helps if you have an idea of what you want: think about your subject, what size you want the picture to be, whether it should be colour or black and white, if it's for a particular occasion, and so on. I mainly offer oil paintings and pencil drawings, but a few other medium options are possible depending on your requirements.

Step 2: You contact me

Send me an email or complete my handy online commission form to let me know what you'd like, and I'll be in touch to talk to you about everything. Please let me know at this stage if your picture will be for a special occasion so I can take into account any deadlines.

Step 3: We agree details and timeline

I contact you either by email, phone or in person, depending on your preference. We work out all the specifics of what you want, including size, medium, framing and if you have a specific deadline or budget. If I am to work from photographs I will advise you on the best photos to provide, or we discuss a plan for me to take photos myself and/or perform in person studies.

Step 4: Contract, Commission and Deposit (where applicable)

After our conversation I provide you a bespoke quote, based on my price list and taking account of your personal preferences. I am happy to offer payment plans for all commissions to help you spread the cost. For larger projects I may require an initial deposit of 30-50% to secure the commission.

Once you agree the price (or pay the deposit as agreed) I am officially contracted to complete your artwork. You can choose to formalise this with a simple contract if you like.

Step 5: I paint or draw the picture

Sit back and relax while I make the magic happen with paint/pencils and canvas/paper. (Though you're still welcome to get in touch during this time!)

Step 6: You review the artwork

When I'm satisfied I've created what you wanted, I'll be in touch to show you a photo of the work to confirm if you're happy. At this point you'll be able to review and request minor adjustments if necessary.

Step 7: I have the artwork framed (if you chose this service)

I can arrange professional framing according to your preferences and also advise you on the best frame options for your project. If you prefer to arrange your own framing I am still happy to suggest colours, styles and suppliers.

Step 8: You make the final payment and I deliver your artwork

After any final adjustments and framing, I'll send you an invoice and arrange delivery. Delivery charges vary depending on the size and weight of your artwork. For customers within a reasonable distance of my studios I will endeavour to deliver in person to ensure security and reduce risk of damage or loss. In this scenario I am also happy to help you hang your artwork if you like!

Patreon

Another way to get involved and get in touch is to subscribe at Patreon to access exclusive content, including unseen artwork and works in progress, for a small monthly fee. Higher tier subscribers also receive unique artworks and store discounts for their patronage. Your support means I can continue to make artwork, run my website and develop my creative practice. Anything you can chip in to help me is really appreciated. Are you ready to become an artist’s patron?

Buy Me a Coffee

You can also chip in the price of a coffee to contribute to my ongoing work - this is a great way to show your appreciation if you can't spare money for artworks. I can't always promise to use your donations to buy coffee - I'm most likely to purchase better pencils and paints!
